David Slade (Hard Candy) brings the vampire comic 30 Days of Night to the screen. Every winter the small, isolated town of Barrow, Alaska becomes even more secluded when the sun goes away for a month. So, why wouldn’t vampires happen, right? They totally happen. Trying to survive this horrible situation are the town sheriff Josh Hartnett (The Faculty), his estranged wife Melissa George (Turistas) and a handful of townies.
The movie is a very faithful adaptation, which is great, but also not so great. Basically, the setup is ingenious, while the payoff is just OK. The direction and cinematography really capture the moody, impressionistic art of the comic and the simple war-drum score cheekily raises the tension. Oh, by the way, I’m SO a member of the Josh Hartnett fan club. He rules in this thing. As long as you’re down with vampire movies that don’t have some ridiculous erotic undertone OR werewolves, I say rent this.
