Choke, based on the novel of the same name by Chuck Palahniuk, stars Sam Rockwell as Victor Mancini, a sex addict who purposely stuffs too much food in his gullet so people will love him. Sound messed up? It is, especially if you were a fan of the book. Director/writer Clark Gregg takes quite a few liberties with the plot of the original story, eliminating side plots and changing the ending completely. But if you never read the book, what do you care?
Choke also stars Anjelica Huston as Victor’s mother Ida, a dementia-ridden former radical, and Kelly MacDonald as Page Marshall, a doctor at the convalescent home. The standout performance of the film comes from TV regular Brad William Henke. You might know him once you see him, but if you recognize his name, you’re probably his aunt. Henke plays Victor’s best friend, the moral compass of the film. Like Jiminy Cricket if he’d said “dude” a lot. He’s the only character in the film who feels real.
All in all, Choke is alright. It’s got a good cast and an interesting story, unfortunately both are let down by unimaginative filmmaking.
