RACHEL GETTING MARRIED – Reviewed by Casey
Anne Hathaway received an Oscar nomination for her role as Kym, a former drug addict and black sheep of the family, returning home from rehab to participate in her sister’s wedding. During this tense and awkward reunion, the audience is forced (via the annoying and unnecessary hand-held camera) to be an uncomfortable witness to the dysfunction as skeletons come out of the closet. Hathaway gets to explore more depth with this character than in most of the roles she’s played (Ella Enchanted, The Princess Diaries, The Devil Wears Prada, Get Smart). Debra Winger (Terms of Endearment, An Officer and a Gentleman, The Sheltering Sky) resurfaces to play an emotionally distant mother reminiscent of Mary Tyler Moore in Ordinary People, but unfortunately has very little screen time. Directed by Jonathan Demme (Oscar winner for Silence of the Lambs – now available on Blu-Ray). Written by Jenny Lumet (daughter of director Sidney Lumet). This film could benefit from some editing, especially during the excruciatingly long unconventional/multi-cultural wedding and reception. Thankfully, on DVD, we can fast forward… [DVD] [Blu-Ray]
