With this week’s Blu-Ray release of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, which received the 2008 Academy Award for Best Visual Effects, we thought we’d take a look back at which special effects dazzled Oscar voters last year. While it remains to be seen whether or not these visual effects will still look good 40 or so years down the road (think: 2001: A Space Odyssey, which won the award in 1969), there’s no doubt that they provide some interesting entertainment on Blu-Ray, today.
Transformers (2007)
The truly impressive effects that brought to life the titular shape-shifting alien robots propelled Transformers to its 2008 Oscar nomination (but not a win, see below…) Catch it again on Blu-Ray before the blockbuster sequel arrives in theaters this summer.
The Golden Compass (2007)
The first installment of Phillip Pullman‘s His Dark Materials Trilogy, The Golden Compass boasts a bevy of talking beasts that secured this family fantasy epic the Best Visual Effects Oscar.
