THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON – Reviewed by Casey
Directed by David Fincher (Se7en, Zodiac, Fight Club), this three hour epic deservedly won Oscars this year for Art Direction, Makeup, and Visual Effects. Spanning nearly nine decades – from the end of World War I to the onset of Hurricane Katrina – The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is reminiscent of films like Forrest Gump and Fried Green Tomatoes. It jumps back and forth in time through a series of flashbacks occasionally interrupted by a present day storyline.
As an elderly Daisy (Cate Blanchett) lies on her deathbed, her daughter (Julia Ormond) reads to her from a diary. The diary belongs to Daisy’s former lover – the titular character – and serves as the narrative vehicle for time travel back to the nostalgic memories in which Daisy is prominently featured in her younger days. Brad Pitt plays Benjamin Button, the man with an unusual condition that causes him to age in reverse. Tilda Swinton co-stars. The film was also nominated for ten other Oscars including Best Director, Best Lead Actor, and Best Picture. Based on a short story by F. Scott Fitzgerald (The Great Gatsby), The Curious Case of Benjamin Button addresses universal themes of life, death, love, fate, decisions, regrets, and redemption and thus offers something for everyone. – [DVD] [Blu-Ray]
