DEFIANCE – Reviewed by Noah
Defiance is the story of the Bielski brothers, who after fleeing the Gestapo Death Squads, build a community of Jews hiding in the forests of Russia. Based on a true story, the film stars Daniel Craig as Tuvia Bielski, the oldest brother, with Liev Schrieber, Jamie Bell and relative newcomer George MacKay as his younger siblings.
Defiance is directed by Edward Zwick, a veteran of such films as and Blood Diamond and Glory. He makes sweeping war films, and this is no exception.
Defiance is not the greatest film I’ve ever seen – this is not Schindler’s List. At its base components it’s a war movie, with an interesting and emotional backstory. This is not to say I don’t recommend it. I thought it was well done. I liked it. I felt genuinely during the film. But it is not one that will change your life.
