From director Karyn Kusama (Girlfight), and writer Diablo Cody (Juno) comes one of the most refreshingly original horror films I have seen in some time, Jennifer’s Body. Think Drop Dead Gorgeous with a dash of Mean Girls, a hint of Heathers, and a whole lot of demonic carnage.

The film 9 was originally presented as a graduating student short film by Shane Acker. The story of 9 follows a group of nine animatronic, tweed-covered puppets that have been brought to life by a “brilliant” scientist at the brink of humanity’s extinction. Why this is done or what is the bringer of such chaotic [...]

A Perfect Getaway doesn’t quite live up to the second word of its double-meaning title, but it’s still a nifty little thriller from writer/director David Twohy (Pitch Black) that manages to surprise just enough to make watching it worthwhile. The setup posits the possibility that one of three couples–newlyweds Steve Zahn and Milla Jovovich, free-spirit [...]

Who’s That Knocking At My Door (1967) Director: Martin Scorsese Its Scorsese’s debut picture, but don’t let that lead you to expect an amateur celluloid hack-job. Harvey Keitel stars in my personal Scorsese favorite. It’s the story of young lovers and regretful pasts. I’ll say no more. With a great soundtrack and stunning visual aesthetics, [...]

2009 has been a great year for the reinvention of the classic motifs of science fiction. Old franchises like Star Trek and Terminator have been revitalized, and the year is ending with James Cameron‘s satisfying epic spectacle, Avatar. Among the most curious and refreshing genre entries this year was Neill Blomkamp‘s District 9. Blomkamp and [...]
