Scrooge (1970) – Recommended by Robin
A wonderful yet oft-overlooked musical version of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol”.
It is my belief that when you film a classic of any kind casting is EVERYTHING. Albert Finney stars as Scrooge along with a cast of fabulous British screen and stage actors. Finney won a Golden Globe for his performance. Alec Guinness appears as Marley’s ghost, and I have never seen a better Mr. Fezziwig than Laurence Naismith. Scrooge received two Academy Award noms for art direction and costume design, and the depiction of Victorian England is magical. Like all great musicals, the songs flow seamlessly into the action (award noms here, as well).
This is a great choice for family viewing–a real film about Christmas as opposed to another cartoon for the kids! I would recommend for kids 6 and up. Incredibly heart-warming and well-executed, this film will become a yearly tradition for your family.
