The prequel to Monsters, Inc. is warm and lighthearted. It opens up with a grade school Mike Wazowski excited for a field trip to the Scare Factory. He sneaks into one of the doors leading into the human world and from there he is indoctrinated into scaring. It is the one and only thing he wants more than anything else in all of monster world. Cut to the first day of Monster University, where unfortunately all anyone sees is a cute green ball.
There are few references to Monsters, Inc. Mike is bunked up with Randall. They become fast friends as the nerdiest of the monsters, holding no real potential for high-scare status. James Sullivan is also of course in the scare program; from the first day of classes, right away Mike and Sully dislike each other. Like most generic Disney movies, because of various hurdles, they soon become friends and it is Randall leaving Mike in the dust. There are also other references to other movies like Carrie, Old School, and Battle Royale.
Overall, I would recommend this as a good family movie; adults and children will both enjoy the similarities to the last movie and the more matured comments. – [DVD]
