Be prepared to get gastronomically close with Ziggy Gruber, a co-owner of a traditional Jewish deli in Houston Texas. He is the grandson of the very first deli owners on Broadway, after the depression, in New York City, the home of delicatessens. The origin of deli life is fascinating. Delis began with the Eastern European Jews. Without them there would be no delis. Or at least it would be a very different world. The Jewish not only brought their food into the public eye, but also their culture. The Yiddish language is reinforced in traditional Jewish delis with a vengeance.
I cannot imagine a place without deli food, but more importantly deli meat on bread, sandwiches. They are by far one of my favorite foods. You can have a sandwich anytime; breakfast, lunch, snack, dinner, snack, dessert. This documentary made me very hungry and also brought to mind Buck 65’s song “Food.” Next vacation stop, Houston, home of Ziggy Gruber and emmess (the truth) Jewish food.
“There are two types of people in this world, those who love deli and those who shouldn’t associate with it.”- [DVD]
